Rohit's unique historical record in 144 years of Test cricket

Rohit's unique historical record in 144 years of Test cricket

Rohit Sharma, who has consistently faced criticism about his performance in Test matches, is in a mood to answer with the bat. What made his challenge a bit easier was the Indian pitch and average bowling of South Africa. He hit a century in both innings of the Visakhapatnam Test.

After scoring 176 runs in the first innings, he scored 127 runs in the second innings as well. For the first time, he landed in the field as an opener and scored a century in both innings. With this, Rohit has become the first such opener in 144 years of Test history to score a century in both innings of his first Test.

Never before in the history of Test cricket has an opener ever scored a century in both innings of his first Test.

21-year-old Akram and 23-year-old Sidhu break records

During this, Rohit Sharma transported the ball 13 times for sixes off the boundary line and broke the record of hitting the most sixes in a Test match. Rohit scored six in the first innings and seven sixes in the second.

When Rohit hit a third six in the second innings, he broke Navjot Singh Sidhu's record of hitting the most sixes in a Test. Sidhu hit 8 sixes during the innings of 124 runs against Sri Lanka in 1994.

After this, Rohit broke the record of 12 sixes in a Test made by Akram in 1996 as soon as he hit the 13th six. Akram then hit 12 sixes in his unbeaten 257-run innings.

Only the sixth Indian to score a century in both innings
Also, Rohit has become the second opener to score a century in both innings of the Test. Before him this achievement was in the name of Sunil Gavaskar.

However, he has become the sixth Indian batsman and 86th international batsman to score a century in both innings. This is the first time since Ajinkya Rahane's achievement in 2015 when someone has scored a century in both innings of the same Test from India.

Before Rohit and Rahane, Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar (thrice), Rahul Dravid (twice) and Virat Kohli have shown this charisma.

Dravid's record broken
Rohit Sharma played his seventh consecutive Test innings of more than 50 runs at home and with this he surpassed Rahul Dravid's record. Dravid had played more than 50 consecutive innings in Test matches played in India during 1997–1998.

It was Rohit Sharma's seventh consecutive innings of more than 50 runs (82, 51 *, 102 *, 65, 50 *, 176, 127) on Indian grounds.
