Auckland T20: India won against New Zealand with half-centuries from Rahul and Iyer

Auckland  On the back of stormy innings by Lokesh Rahul and man of the match Shreyas Iyer, India started their long tour by beating hosts New Zealand by six wickets in the first T20 match played at the Eden Park ground on Friday.  Batting first, New Zealand scored a mammoth score of 203 at the loss of five wickets in 20 overs thanks to the excellent innings of Ross Taylor (54 not out), Colin Munro (59) and Kane Williamson (51).

India achieved this goal by losing four wickets in 19 overs.  Rahul scored 56 runs in 27 balls with four fours and three sixes.  He shared a 99-run partnership for the second wicket with Virat Kohli (45).  But when both of them were out, Iyer took the responsibility of winning India and with 29 fours and three sixes, the sharp unbeaten 58-run innings helped his team win the game.

With this, India took a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series.  This is India's third highest chasing target in T20.  Earlier, he has defeated Sri Lanka and the Windies chasing a target of more runs.  Chasing the target, India got a big blow in the second over itself.  Vice-captain Rohit Sharma (7) was dismissed by Mitchell Santner with the help of Taylor.

From here, Rahul and Captain Kohli handled the Indian innings and kept it in the race of victory.  After completing the half-century, Rahul was caught by Tim Southee in an attempt to play a big shot off the ball of Ish Sodhi on a total score of 115.  Saudi caught Rahul's excellent catch.  Going one step ahead of Saudi, Martin Guptill relieved Kohli's amazing catch at deep midwicket.  Kohli missed the half-century by five runs.  He played 32 balls with three fours and one six.
