BJP leader Chaudhary Birendra Singh resigns from Rajya Sabha

BJP leader Chaudhary Birendra Singh resigns from Rajya Sabha

Former Union Minister and BJP leader Birendra Singh has resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership.  This information was given in an official letter on Tuesday.  The letter stated that Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has accepted his resignation.

He became a member of the Rajya Sabha for the third time on 2 August 2016 and his membership was to end on 1 August 2022.  The official letter said that Member of Rajya Sabha and Representative of Haryana Chaudhary Birendra Singh resigned from the membership of the Upper House which has been accepted by the Rajya Sabha Chairman with effect from 20 January 2020.

Birendra Singh first became a member of the Upper House on August 2, 2010.  He resigned on August 28, 2014.  Singh, representing Haryana in the Upper House, left the Congress and joined the BJP just before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.  He then became a member of the Rajya Sabha on 29 November 2014.

Singh's resignation comes after his son Brijendra Singh became MP.  Former bureaucrat and BJP leader Brijendra Singh is an MP from Hisar Lok Sabha seat.

Birendra Singh's wife Prem Lata contested the Haryana assembly elections last year, but lost to Janushnayak Janata Party leader Dushyant Chautala.  Prem Lata is a former MLA of Uchana Kalan.
